ABANDONED

South Fremantle Power Station

Meet Jess.
A seventeen year old, coffee making anomaly of sorts.
Lost at the crossroads, she is capricious yet considered.
The warm autumn sun set as we explored the aerosol deviants mecca,
the home of lost souls, been and gone.

KINGS PICNIC

Kings Park, Perth

Now I know I've been on a blogging hiatus of late, mostly due to work & life-in-general commitments but regardless of this fact I was kindly extended an invitation to the Perth Fashion Blogger's picnic in Kings Park. So in return of this generosity - heavens-behold - its a post, dedicated to all the beautiful girls I was lucky enough to meet.

As I explained to those who attended, I have one more week of work and then I will be attending university full time this year, in an attempt to finally finish my masters. I'm hoping, best laid plans will result in better organisation and more time to devote back to all things Zeus & Whyess (more about that sooon). In the mean time, enjoy as we did, a few candid snaps from our stylish afternoon in the wind...

JAMES DEAN

Vintage shopping today I came across this 1987 copy of 'James Dean : photography by his friend Sanford Roth' and its simply beautiful

"In James Dean, today's youth discovers itself. Less for the reasons usually advanced: violence, sadism, hysteria, pessimism, cruelty and filth than for others, more simple and commonplace: modesty of feeling, continual fantasy life, moral purity without relation to everyday morality (but all the more rigorous), the eternal adolescent love of tests and trials, intoxication, pride and regret at feeling oneself outside of society, refusal and desire to become integrated and finally, acceptance or refusal of the world as it is." - Francois Truffaut

1974

21

IT WAS MY LITTLE SISTERS BIRTHDAY ON THE WEEKEND. UNUSUALLY, MY PARENTS CAME UP FROM THE FARM TO ORGANIZE A LITTLE SOIREE TO CELEBRATE. IN CLASSIC COUNTRY STYLE, A BEAST WAS KILLED FOR THE EVENT TO FEED GUESTS WITH HOT ROAST BEEF GRAVY ROLLS AND HOMEMADE SAUSAGE ROLLS WHICH WERE, THANKS MUM, AMAZING. I TOOK MY CAMERA COMPLETE WITH A NEW 50MM LENS AND I'M PRETTY HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS. THE NIGHT WAS EPIC - HAPPY BIRTHDAY FI!.

PLITVICE

DAY 41: PLITVICE

If I can recommend one place for anyone to go in the Balkans (especially the all plentiful Aussies in Croatia)  it would easily be Plitvice Lakes National Park.  Forget the postcard beaches and trek inland, these turquoise waters really have to be seen to be believed. Plitvice, a site of many past conflicts and civilizations, is now one of the most beautiful natural wonders I have ever had to pleasure to visit...

ATHENA

DAY 76: ATHENA

After logging off from the cyber world a million miles home, the traveller meanders through sweaty souvenir laden streets in search of a silver relic.  An old man local points west.  The perfect relic indeed.  The transaction is counted by a salesman with a familiar twang.  A conversation is struck.   Beers and gyros are shared.   Stories of ancient cities and philosophers are brought to life as are old Grecian wives tales and superstitions.   Minutes turn to hours spent surrounded by cheerful sunset paintings.   Cool darkness blankets the city, the store is vacated, the adventure continues.   Late into the night.   Gothic lady lovers, professional inline skaters, art aficionados, a ska-punk cover band.   New daylight coerces warm goodbyes.

May we meet again George & Athena.

WORKOUT

WORKOUT.
I wish that this could be me today, such beautiful sun.

TUZ GOLU

DAY 93: Tuz Gölü

A day before my birthday, three months on the road.  I'm in transit from the lunar Cappadoccia to insatiable Istanbul - 14 hours.  Unbearable humidity erodes our bus and sanity.  We approach Tuz Gölü (the Salt Lake);    White Light.    A dehydrated pilgrimage of sorts into the milky, saline world.

Hours later our legs are dusted with crusty snowflakes.

PYRAMID

THIS REMIND ME OF AN AWESOME STEPHEN HAWKINS-ESC TRIPPY WORMHOLE

TURBEVILLE

A GROUP OF YOUNG WOMEN POSED AT THE ASTOR LEVY PLACE BATHHOUSE IN NEW YORK.  IT WAS CONSIDERED GROUNDBREAKING, LARGELY DUE TO ITS PENETRATING INSIGHT INTO FEMALE SEXUALITY.

'IT’S VERY COMPLEX,’ SHE TOLD ME.  'IF YOU USE CLOTHES THE WAY I TRY TO USE CLOTHES WHEN I WORK WITH THE RIGHT KIND OF STYLISTS AND EDITORS, THEN IT BECOMES A DESCRIPTION. IT’S LIKE DRESSING SOMEONE FOR A FILM OR A PORTRAIT. IT GOES BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF PAINTING, OR THE SILENT FILMS THAT I RESPECT SO MUCH AND WATCH SO AVIDLY. CLOTHES ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO ME, MORE SO, I SUSPECT, THAN FOR COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHERS.

I LOOK ON FASHION AND STYLE AS A VALUE THAT ALLOWS ME TO MAKE A PICTURE IN ANOTHER WAY.’

CYMBIDIUM

TOTALLY RANDOM BUT THAT'S MY PREROGATIVE, THESE ARE SOME PHOTOS I JUST TOOK FOR MY MUM. WHEN I WAS HOME FOR EASTER SHE GAVE ME A LESSON ON ISO AND APERTURE SO THIS IS THE RESULT OF A LITTLE TEST WITH MY MACRO LENS, NO FLASH OR TRIPOD.

THE SUBJECT IS A BEAUTIFUL CYMBIDIUM (ORCHID) THAT MUM COLLECTS AND GROWS. SHE LENT ME THIS FLOWERING ONE TO KEEP INDOORS FOR A WHILE - IT PUTS A SMILE ON MY FACE EVERY MORNING.

EVER SINCE I WAS A CHILD, WITH MY MUM A BOTANIST & SURROUNDED BY FOREST,  I THOUGHT THESE WERE THE MOST MAJESTIC QUEENS OF THE FLOWERING KINGDOM.    TODAY,  THE SIMPLICITY, EXOTICISM, FORM & DELICACY OF ORCHIDS STILL INFLUENCES MY DESIGNS...

ILLUMINOUS REFLECTIONS

I'VE ALWAYS APPRECIATED NATALIE WOOD'S DESIGN AESTHETIC AND VISION.   WITHIN HER DIVERSE BODY OF WORK FOR SURF & SKATE BRAND INSIGHT, THE HIGH FASHION BEAUTY OF NATURE PROJECT AND EVERY-GIRLS SOMETHING, I ALWAYS FIND A POINT OF DIFFERENCE.

SOME HOW I MISSED THE LATEST LOOKBOOK BUT AFTER SCOURING THE WEB I TRACKED DOWN SOMETHING ELSE'S CURRENT WINTER COLLECTION, ILLUMINOUS REFLECTIONS... VERY WEARABLE WITH A DARK EDGE AND A DASH OF THE WHIMSICAL.  (P.S. I LOVE THE GRAPHIC WORK, BRING ON PHOTOSHOP LAYERS & PASTEL GRADIENTS...)

GRACE

I WAS MEANT TO POST THESE AROUND THE ACADEMY AWARDS LAST MONTH BUT THEIR TOO BEAUTIFUL NOT TO NOW; CANDID SHOTS OF GRACE KELLY'S OSCAR WIN FOR THE COUNTRY GIRL...

THE SMART MONEY THAT NIGHT HAD BEEN ON A STAR IS BORN'S JUDY GARLAND, WHO AT THE TIME WAS IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER GIVING BIRTH TO A SON TWO DAYS EARLIER; A PLAN WAS EVEN IN PLACE FOR LAUREN BACALL TO RUSH OVER TO GARLAND'S ROOM TO PRESENT HER THE AWARD, WITH AN NBC CAMERAMAN AT THE READY TO CAPTURE IT ALL. WROTE LIFE OF KELLY'S UPSET WIN: "EVEN THOSE ACADEMY MEMBERS WHO VOTED FOR GRACE KELLY FELT A LITTLE SORRY THAT THEIR BALLOTS DEPRIVED HOLLYWOOD, LAND OF DRAMA, OF A SOCKO DRAMATIC FINISH."

CAGED GEM

ITS A RARE DAY THAT I SHOP AT LUNCH AND ITS A RARER STILL WHEN I BUY ACCESSORIES SO THESE LITTLE CAGED GEMS FROM PIGEONHOLE MUST HAVE CAUGHT ME IN A GOOD MOOD TODAY.

PIGEONHOLE IS A ENDEARING LITTLE PERTH BOUTIQUE WITH ECLECTIC, WELL SOURCED GIFTS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE. YOU CAN SHOP ONLINE, AS I HAVE JUST DISCOVERED, BUT THE CHEERY STAFF MAKE IT MUCH MORE FUN IN PERSON. TO FILL AN AFTERNOON, POP NEXT DOOR FOR A CHEAP-AS-CHIPS MISO & TEMPURA LUNCH AT TAKA CHASED BY A REFRESHING GOLDEN ALE AT NEWLY-OPENNED SQUIRE MICRO BREWERY ALL THE WHILE WATCHING THE WORLD GO BY...
